Benjamin Richeton - Solo Cornet

Benjamin hails from Gray (near Dijon), France. He started music at the age of 7 playing piano and picked up the cornet two years later. He quickly joined the local brass band where he played soprano cornet for 6 years and notably performed and recorded solo items alongside with French trumpet virtuoso Guy Touvron.

At the age of 17 Benjamin was appointed principal cornet of the European Youth Brass Band that took place in Birmingham and moved to the soprano cornet seat for the two following years taking place in Norway and Belgium. He has also been principal trumpet of the National Youth Wind Orchestra of France as well as being guest soprano cornet with the National Youth Brass Band of Switzerland.

After earning his French professional diploma in trumpet performance with distinction at the age of 18 Benjamin went to study performance, composition and conducting under Peter Graham, David King and Howard Evans at the University of Salford. He graduated in 2010 with first class honours while winning the coveted University awards, the Harry Mortimer Performance Prize, the Roy Newsome Conducting Prize and the Anne Welsh Memorial Ensemble Prize. Benjamin is the current Oxford Brass Festival Open Solo Champion and has also gone through to the finals of the Alençon European Young Trumpeters Competition and the BBC Radio 2 Young Brass Soloist Competition.

Benjamin played cornet and soprano cornet for one year with the YBS Band (now Hammonds Saltaire Band) before accepting in October 2009 the offer to join the Grimethorpe Colliery Band where he plays solo cornet. He would like to get into teaching and continue his musical studies through a Master's degree in performance or conducting.
